The Sicilian “Capital of Baroque” cannot but boast a jewel-theatre. Rebuilt after the earthquake of 1693, like the rest of the Old City, the present theatre took shape in 1851, when the mayor of the time and a citizens’ committee launched a fund-raising campaign. The initial design was passed from the engineer Francesco Sortino to Francesco Cassone, with decorations by the Messina painter Santi Ferrara, until it was inaugurated in 1870.<\/p>\n

Welcoming us is the sandstone statue representing the allegory of Music, in the centre of the vestibule, the work of sculptor Giuliano Palazzolo; the stage decorations bear the signature of Sicilian painters Subba and Di Stefano. One sits in a gallery with 80 seats and three rows of boxes, with a capacity of 320.<\/p>\n
