Sicani Mountains

Details

The Sicani Mountains occupy a large area of the island, halfway between the cities of Palermo and Agrigento. It is an area characterized by a clayey hilly zone, with prehistoric (Mesozoic) rocks, rich in pastures.

The flora and fauna of the Sicani Mountains represent a naturalistic heritage waiting to be discovered, including specimens of Brown Kite and Golden Eagle, which can be admired on trails set up for birdwatching and trekking through the woods.

Horseback riding enthusiasts can enjoy the unforgettable experience of the Sicani Mountains Horseback Trail, a 7-kilometer route that leads up to an altitude of about 700 meters.

The experience is suitable for everyone and offers the chance to cross old mule tracks that are still viable. The bridle path starts near the small town of Prizzi, where the lake of the same name is located, in a scenic spot surrounded by oaks, holm oaks and downy oaks.

In the heart of the Sicani Mountains flows the source of the Sosio River, which draws extensive grasslands with the line of its streams, valleys and large gorges to explore.

The river is part of the Oriented Nature Reserve “Monti di Palazzo Adriano e Valle del Sosio”, which takes its name from the town of Palazzo Adriano, one of the historic centers that we absolutely recommend visiting during an excursion in the Sicanian area.
