Detail
A bicycle journey among the wonders of Sicilian Baroque along a three-day itinerary between Syracuse and Ragusa. An immersive experience among UNESCO sites, little-traveled secondary roads and a landscape characterized by white stone dry walls, carob trees, olive trees, vineyards and prickly pears.
A tour among art, nature and history
Cycling in the Baroque heart of Sicily means passing through cities of art, enchanting beaches and authentic rural landscapes. Over three days and 240 km, the route runs between the provinces of Syracuse and Ragusa, along roads immersed in nature and rich in history.
Stage 1: Syracuse to Pozzallo.
The itinerary begins in Syracuse, with a visit to the island of Ortigia, a historic jewel that preserves the Temple of Apollo, Piazza Duomo and the majestic cathedral. A symbolic place of the crossroads of peoples and cultures that have marked Sicily over the centuries.
Continuing south, a rejuvenating stop awaits on the beach at Fontane Bianche, before passing through Avola and reaching Noto, capital of the late Sicilian Baroque and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The route continues along the Vendicari Nature Reserve, an oasis of biodiversity that leads to the picturesque seaside village of Marzamemi. Here the ancient tuna fishery and timeless atmosphere make every stop an evocative experience.
Pedaling along the southern coast of the island, we finally reach Pozzallo, a renowned seaside resort dominated by the historic Cabrera Tower.
Stage 2: From Pozzallo to Ragusa Ibla
The second day is dedicated to the hinterland and its Baroque treasures. After skirting the coast to Sampieri, the route enters the Monti Iblei as far as Scicli, famous for its extraordinary Baroque architecture and for being the set of the series Il Commissario Montalbano.
From here it continues to Modica, famous for its artistic wonders and traditional cold-processed chocolate, an Aztec legacy all to be enjoyed.
The journey continues along the Irminio River valley to Ragusa Ibla, a village perched on a hill, dominated by the magnificent Cathedral of San Giorgio, an authentic symbol of the Hyblean Baroque.
Stage 3: From Ragusa Ibla to Syracuse.
The last day brings us back to Syracuse by crossing evocative scenery. The route passes the Lake of Santa Rosalia and the small town of Giarratana, known for its production of sweet onions.
Passing the Monti Iblei, we reach Palazzolo Acreide, another pearl of Sicilian Baroque. From here, a scenic descent leads back to the starting city, concluding a travel experience that combines history, nature and culture in an unforgettable mix.
