Regina Margherita Theater

The Regina Margherita Theater in Caltanissetta was completed in 1873, designed by architect Alfonso Barbera, and named after the then Princess Margherita, consort of the future King Umberto I. Particularly operative until World War II, it helped increase cultural ferment in the city and throughout the province, thanks to performances of the caliber of Giuseppe Verdi’s Turandot and Macbeth.

Following wartime devastation and a time of neglect, it experienced a shutdown and a lengthy restoration, only to reopen to the public in 1997. Today the Regina Margherita Theater is a state-of-the-art structure: the interior features four tiers of boxes and is decorated in Neoclassical style with Baroque inserts, the work of Luigi and Fortunato Queriaux.

Thanks to an efficient public-private synergy, the Regina Margherita Theater is able to host touring shows but also to produce its own, offering a diverse annual playbill capable of satisfying the taste of Nissen’s wide audience.
