Feast of Sant’Agata in Catania

Info

An extraordinary edition between tradition and innovation

In the heart of Catania, from 3 to 5 February, the city experiences one of its most heartfelt and spectacular celebrations: the Feast of Sant’Agata.

The 2025 edition, the year of the Jubilee, promises to be even more special, with a program full of new features.
One of the main innovations of this edition is the inclusion of the relics of Saint Lucia in the Cathedral. This meeting between two great saints of the Sicilian tradition is a significant moment that underlines the spiritual bond of the faithful with the two saints.

The program of the festival is enriched with cultural and reflective initiatives, including a historical conference on the cult of the first Christian martyrs and the awarding of the Archdiocese of Catania Award, entitled “Sant’Agata, witness of faith, hope and charity”, to those who have distinguished themselves for their testimony of faith and charitable commitment.

Between Religious Rites and Popular Traditions

The festival develops over three intense days of celebrations that mix religious rites and popular traditions.

  • February 3: The Wax Offering and the Candelora Procession

The festival begins with the offering of wax, during which devotees carry candles of different sizes, a sign of their devotion. The spectacular Candelora procession follows, with the traditional candlesticks carried on the shoulders by the faithful. The day ends with an extraordinary fireworks display in Piazza Duomo

  • February 4: The Dawn Mass and the Procession

The most exciting day of the festival, with the Dawn Mass celebrated in the Cathedral. The relics of Sant’Agata are transferred on the silver fercolo and carried in procession through the streets of the city, crossing symbolic places such as the Church of Sant’Agata al Carcere.

  • February 5: The Solemn Procession

The culmination of the festival, with the solemn procession of the fercolo of Sant’Agata, accompanied by the songs of the faithful. The event ends with a spectacular fireworks display that lights up the sky of Catania, marking the end of the celebrations.
