Dinghy excursion to the Gorges of Tiberius

The Tiberio Gorges, a natural canyon about 400 meters long, are a UNESCO-recognized Geopark site within the Madonie Park, more precisely between the municipalities of San Mauro Castelverde and Castelbuono. They take their name from the hamlet of Tiberio, a farmhouse in the municipality of San Mauro Castelverde with noble origins. The geosite is
consists of a fluvio-carstic gorge incised by the Pollina River at calcareous rocks, dating from about 200 million years ago (Upper Triassic). Along the walls are
visible morphologies related to fluvial action and karstification. The excursion, lasting a couple of hours, includes crossing the Gorge in an inflatable boat and a walk along the
Pollina River that, depending on the period, takes place downstream to the Small Gorge or upstream to the small lakes, in both cases it is possible to swim. Along the way you can
admire the flora and fauna typical of the river environment. Inside the Gorge it is possible to observe: fossils, U miricu, birds’ nests, the brigands’ boulder, light games and an
unspoiled and wild vegetation immersed in silence.

PLACE OF ACTIVITY: Tiberio Gorges in Contrada Tiberio in San Mauro Castelverde (Pa). The gorges are located in the Pollina River 10 km from the sea, 12 km from San Mauro Castelverde and 35 km from Cefalù. How to get there by car: exit A 20 Castelbuono (Pa) or Tusa (Me), follow direction to Finale di Pollina in both cases; passed the village ( for those arriving from Castelbuono) or before the village (for those arriving from Tusa) take the SP 52 to San Mauro Castelverde (Pa), at 8 km (junction Borrello) turn right and continue on the SP 60 for 1.5 km to the junction Tiberio, here always to the right take the small road (first paved and then dirt) for about 700 m to the equipped area La Rocca where the path begins.
